Why Inusah Fuseini is against a third-term bid for President Mahama
Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini
A former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has explained why he would oppose any attempt by President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third presidential term, warning that attempts by African leaders to manipulate constitutional provisions to extend their stay in power have been a major source of instability across the continent.
According to Fuseini, the tendency of presidents to alter or manipulate constitutional arrangements to prolong their tenure has weakened democratic institutions, created political tensions and contributed to instability in several African countries.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, October 31, 2026, the former legislator said he would want President Mahama to respect the spirit of the 1992 Constitution and refrain from seeking another term, even if the Supreme Court rules that the Constitution permits an individual to serve more than two presidential terms.

“Even if the Supreme Court would rule that a president can go more than two terms, I would pray that John Dramani doesn’t do that,” he stated.
Fuseini stressed that the problem of constitutional manipulation by African leaders should not be encouraged, arguing that attempts to change constitutional provisions for personal political advantage have often created conditions for instability.
“What has caused instability in African countries is the tinkering with the Constitution,” he said.
His comments come amid a legal challenge filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Supreme Court, seeking an interpretation of the constitutional provisions governing presidential tenure, particularly whether the two-term limit applies to consecutive and non-consecutive terms.
The NPP is asking the court to clarify whether an individual can serve a maximum of two four-year presidential terms in total, irrespective of whether the terms are served consecutively or separated by a break.
