Kenyasi: Prison officers, inmates allegedly attack man with machetes

Two prison officers and three inmates at the Kenyasi Settlement Camp Prison in the Ahafo Region have allegedly attacked a man with machetes, leaving him with multiple wounds. The victim, Opoku Afriyie, a resident of Kenyasi No. 2 who works as a sound system operator and commercial motorbike rider, is receiving treatment at the Asutifi North District Hospital. Mr Afriyie said the incident occurred on Thursday while he was transporting a passenger on his motorbike. According to him, a prison officer and three inmates intercepted him and allegedly attacked him with machetes over accusations that he had stolen yams from the officer’s farm. He said the attack left him with wounds to his arms, legs, abdomen, neck and other parts of his body. Mr Afriyie further alleged that another prison officer later arrived, handcuffed him and took him to the Kenyasi Settlement Camp Prison, where another officer allegedly slapped him repeatedly before he was handed over to the Kenyasi Police. Police officers who saw the extent of his injuries reportedly arranged for him to be taken to the Asutifi North District Hospital, where he remains on admission. Mr Afriyie said he continues to experience severe pain and is concerned that those he accused of attacking him have not yet been arrested. He is appealing to the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. The Asutifi District Police Command, led by Superintendent Harold Yamoah Ponkor, has launched an investigation. Mr Afriyie has also appealed for financial assistance to help settle his medical bills.
