Watch Minority's reaction after Bagbin rejects narcotics inquiry

The Minority in Parliament broke into chants and displayed placards in protest after Speaker Alban Bagbin dismissed a Private Member’s Motion seeking a parliamentary inquiry into recent narcotics seizures linked to Ghana. Parliament was summoned to sit on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, amid calls for the House to scrutinise a series of reported major narcotics seizures linked to the country. However, the Speaker ruled that the motion was inadmissible, citing an overlap between the proposed parliamentary inquiry and ongoing investigations and criminal proceedings before the courts. According to Bagbin, allowing Parliament to investigate the matter while the cases were before the courts could prejudice the interests of the parties involved. He said he had carefully considered the motion, its proposed terms of reference, the investigations already underway and the pending court proceedings before arriving at his decision. The ruling, however, did not sit well with the Minority caucus.
