Three suspected armed robbers killed in police shootout at Poano

Three suspected armed robbers have been shot dead following a police operation at Poano near Nkawie in the Ashanti Region. The suspects, identified as 56-year-old Yaw Adu Gyamfi, alias Forsher, 38-year-old Emmanuel Boamah Gyebi, alias Begee, and 29-year-old Felix Topman, alias Rasta, were arrested at Dousarp Hotel at Atwima Mim on September 22, 2026. The Ashanti South Regional Police Command said it had gathered intelligence that Forsher and his gang, who were wanted in connection with a series of robberies in Obuasi, New Edubiase and the Manso areas, were hiding at the hotel and allegedly preparing to commit another crime. Suspect allegedly admits involvement in robberies and killings According to the Police, Forsher, during interrogation, admitted involvement in several robbery incidents and killings. The Police said he mentioned the alleged killing of the Chief of Atwima Mim, who was reportedly killed in a bathroom some years ago, as well as the killing of the Chief of Atwima Koforidua. He also allegedly admitted involvement in the Mankranso robbery on August 7, 2026, several roadblock robberies around Nkawie, and the shooting of retired DCOP Rev Dr Nana Samuel Adane Ameyaw Nyamekye in the leg. The suspect also implicated Begee and Rasta as accomplices. A search conducted following their arrest reportedly led to the recovery of one pump-action gun, 12 rounds of BB cartridges and eight rounds of .32 Auto ammunition. The suspects allegedly told investigators that they were planning to attack road users on the Anwia Nkwanta-Antoakrom Motor Road on the night of the operation. They further disclosed that additional weapons had been buried in a bush at Poano for use in the planned attack. At about 7:00 p.m., the police team proceeded to Poano with the suspects to retrieve the concealed weapons. The Police said that while the team was searching the bush, unknown persons opened fire on them. The three suspects also allegedly attempted to escape into the bush. The officers returned fire in self-defence, resulting in all three suspects sustaining gunshot wounds. A police officer, Chief Inspector Joseph Kwakye, also sustained a minor injury during the exchange of gunfire and is receiving medical treatment. The Police said other suspected accomplices, who are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds, managed to escape into the bush. The search subsequently led to the recovery of one unmarked AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition. Two unmarked pump-action guns and 24 rounds of BB cartridges were also recovered from a sack concealed under a palm tree. The three suspects were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital for medical attention but were pronounced dead on arrival by the medical officer on duty. Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The Police said investigations are continuing, while efforts are underway to apprehend the escaped suspects.
