Thomas Partey injury setback raises Ghana concerns ahead of AFCON qualifiers
Ghana deputy captain Thomas Partey is facing a race against time to be fit for the Black Stars’ upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after suffering a minor physical setback at Al-Shabab. The 33-year-old midfielder has been ruled out of Al-Shabab’s next two Saudi Pro League matches against Al-Kholood and Al-Fayha and will undergo a specialised recovery programme under the club’s fitness staff. Partey’s absence comes at a worrying time for Ghana, with the Black Stars set to face Cote d’Ivoire on September 24 before taking on The Gambia on September 27 in their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. The midfielder’s fitness will now be closely monitored ahead of the two fixtures, with Ghana hoping he can recover in time to play a role in the qualifiers. Partey only joined Al-Shabab on August 21 after signing a one-year contract as a free agent, having previously played for Arsenal and Villarreal. The Saudi club has opted against rushing him back into action, with the focus on ensuring he regains full fitness and avoids aggravating the setback. For Ghana, his potential absence would be a setback given his experience and importance to the Black Stars’ midfield. Source: GhanaWeb
