Queiroz: Black Stars need stable core to challenge for major titles

Black Stars Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has stressed the need for Ghana to build a stable core of players if the national team is to compete consistently for major titles. Addressing the press on Monday, September 21, the Portuguese coach said frequent changes to the squad make it difficult to develop the continuity, stability and consistency required for a successful national team. According to Queiroz, Ghana cannot afford to regularly replace a large portion of the squad and still expect the team to develop into a cohesive unit. “You can change the team at 7, 8, 10 players or 12 players every single game. Nobody can succeed and nobody can be champion and reach the finals,” he said. He said the focus must instead be on building the team around a core group of players who are consistently available for selection. “You have to find one way to build a team around the core of players that sustain the team,” Queiroz added. The coach, however, identified player injuries as a major obstacle to achieving that continuity, revealing that he had potential players unavailable at the start of his current assessment of the squad. He said the situation has prompted him to consider a deeper investigation into the frequency of injuries among Ghanaian players, particularly certain types of injuries. Queiroz maintained that player availability, commitment and accountability would be critical to building a Black Stars team capable of competing at the highest level.
