Patrice Motsepe confirms current term will be his last as CAF president
Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has reaffirmed that his current tenure will be his final term in office, stressing the need to establish a strong foundation for the future of African football.
The South African businessman made the declaration during a press conference at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cape Verde, where football leaders are discussing the continent's development priorities and long-term direction.
Motsepe said it was important to put structures in place that would sustain progress in African football beyond his leadership and help strengthen the game for future generations.
He was first elected CAF president on 12 March 2021 after the other four candidates withdrew from the election.
Motsepe was re-elected unopposed on 12 March 2025 during CAF's 14th Extraordinary General Assembly, securing a second term at the helm of African football's governing body.
His latest comments reinforce his position that he does not intend to remain in office beyond his current mandate, placing greater emphasis on the legacy his administration hopes to leave behind.
Since taking office, Motsepe has repeatedly outlined his ambition to improve African football through stronger competitions, increased support for member associations and better development opportunities for players and national teams.
He has also stressed the need for African football authorities to assess past shortcomings, review existing policies and identify areas requiring improvement as the continent prepares for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
One of the major ambitions of CAF's leadership is to create the conditions for an African nation to win the World Cup, a milestone the continent has yet to achieve.
The strategy conference in Cape Verde provides an opportunity for administrators and other stakeholders to examine the challenges facing the game and discuss reforms that could improve Africa's competitiveness on the global stage.
Motsepe's emphasis on building lasting institutions comes at a time when CAF continues to consider how to strengthen its competitions, improve football development and support national associations across the continent.
His confirmation that he will not seek to continue beyond his current term is also likely to focus attention on succession planning and the need for an orderly transition when his presidency ends.
For now, the focus remains on the outcomes of the strategy conference and the policies that will emerge from discussions aimed at securing a more sustainable future for African football.
