‘NPP provoked me, dented my image’ - Cynthia Morrison explains independent candidacy
Former Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, Cynthia Morrison
Former Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, Cynthia Morrison, has revealed that her decision to contest the 2024 general elections as an independent parliamentary candidate was not influenced by her defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries but by what she described as deliberate attempts by some party members to tarnish her reputation.
According to the former MP, she had no intention of contesting as an independent candidate after losing the party's parliamentary primaries until some individuals within the NPP allegedly launched personal attacks against her.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM on October 16, 2026, Cynthia Morrison maintained that she has no regrets about her decision to contest against her own party, insisting that the circumstances surrounding her independent candidacy have been widely misunderstood.
"I have no regrets because, one, I did not contest as an independent candidate because I lost the primaries. No, that is not why I contested," she stated.
Explaining the circumstances that led to her decision, the former legislator disclosed that she initially accepted the outcome of the parliamentary primaries and had planned to travel abroad to assist her daughter, who was expecting a baby.
She indicated that immediately after the primaries, she returned home peacefully, with no intention of challenging the party's decision.
However, she subsequently received videos showing some individuals allegedly celebrating her defeat by hooting at her and symbolically sweeping her out of the constituency with brooms.
According to her, although she initially ignored the incident as part of the political atmosphere surrounding elections, she became concerned when some of the women involved allegedly approached her to apologise.

"Then I saw women with brooms sweeping Cynthia Morrison out of the constituency. And some of them came to apologise to me that it was the guy who won who paid them to do that," she alleged.
The former MP further claimed that the attacks did not end with the incident, as some individuals allegedly moved into markets and communities within the constituency to spread damaging allegations about her.
She expressed disappointment that the allegations reportedly extended to her husband and other aspects of her personal life.
"My reputation is very important. Politics, Nana Addo lost how many times before he became president? So as for the loss, it has nothing to do with it at all," she explained.
Cynthia Morrison also accused the NPP leadership of failing to intervene despite repeated complaints about the alleged attacks on her personality.
According to her, neither the party executives nor other influential members made any meaningful attempt to address the situation.
"Over and over again, I talked about it. Nobody called us. Nobody did anything," she lamented.
She insisted that the persistent attacks and the failure of party authorities to resolve the matter eventually pushed her into taking the independent route.
"They provoked me. Seriously. They dented my image. And anybody who is listening in Agona West knows what I'm talking about," she emphasised.
