NPP Delegates conference: Obiri Boahen urges unity ahead of 2028 comeback
Lawyer Obiri Boahen is the former deputy General Secretary of the NPP Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and legal practitioner, Nana Obiri Boahen, has revealed why he did not endorse any aspirant in the party’s national executive elections, arguing that his status as a founding elder requires him to remain neutral and fatherly to all factions. Speaking on the sidelines of the party’s internal electoral engagements, Lawyer Obiri Boahen recounted his unbroken journey with the NPP since its inception in 1992, noting that as one of the few surviving pioneers of the party, taking sides in internal contests would undermine his moral authority to foster post-election reconciliation. "This party was founded in 1992, and I have been part of it from day one. Fortunately, I am among the few remaining members from that foundation era, meaning most of our current members and aspirants were not there when we started. It would therefore be unfair and inappropriate on my part as an elder to throw my weight behind any particular candidate. I leave the choice entirely to the wisdom of the delegates." Lawyer Obiri Boahen stated. The veteran politician expressed absolute confidence in the delegates' ability in electing competent and visionary national executives who can unify the rank and file. He reminded party members that internal contests are family affairs that must be conducted without bitterness, personal animosity, or lingering divisions. He recalled his own historic role in shaping the party’s leadership, noting that he was the pioneering advocate who championed the presidential candidacy of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as far back as 2021. "When it comes to those who campaigned for Dr Bawumia to become the flagbearer, I was the very first person to openly begin that advocacy in 2021. Now that we have successfully made him our leader, the supreme duty before us is to unite the party, conduct our elections peacefully, and purge our ranks of all forms of bitterness." Turning his attention to the governance, Lawyer Obiri Boahen argued that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has already lost the confidence of the Ghanaian electorate due to incompetence and a trail of broken promises. He cited the controversial demolitions at Labadi Beach and other socio-economic hardships as evidence that the NDC administration has failed even its staunch sympathizers. According to him, the governing party’s poor performance makes an NPP victory in the 2028 general elections inevitable, provided the opposition party maintains strategic cohesion. "The NDC’s incompetence is a clear indication that Ghanaians are yearning for the return of the NPP. Their trail of failed promises and anti-people actions such as the Labadi Beach demolitions, have disappointed even those who voted for them. The road to victory is wide open for the NPP, but we can only walk through that door if we remain strategically united." Lawyer Obiri Boahen concluded.
