Born in Kwesimintsim, a suburb of Takoradi in the Western Region, Alhassan was a talented goalkeeper who had ambitions of representing Ghana at the highest level. His abilities had caught the attention of fellow footballers, and by 1988, he was reportedly part of the process of assembling Ghana's first national Under-17 team. But in 1989, when he was still a teenager, a fight with a friend changed the course of his life. Ibrahim Tanko, Godwin Attram to lead Black Stars against Somalia In an interview with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai in 2025, Alhassan recounted how the confrontation turned tragic after he struck his friend with a key. "When we had the fight, I had a key, and I used it on him. Unfortunately, he died when he was rushed to the hospital," he said. Alhassan said he spent four years on remand before being sentenced in 1993. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death on March 19 that year. The consequences of the incident extended far beyond the courtroom, bringing his football ambitions to an abrupt end. A talent remembered by former Black Stars players Despite the decades that have passed, Alhassan's footballing ability has not been forgotten by some of the former players who knew him before his incarceration. Former Black Stars striker Augustine Ahinful, who played alongside him during their younger years, remembered him as an outstanding goalkeeper. "Alhassan was a very good goalkeeper. Extremely good," Ahinful told Muftawu Nabila Abdulai. Former Ghana international Yaw Preko shared a similarly glowing assessment of Alhassan's abilities, suggesting that he was exceptional among goalkeepers of his generation. "There was no goalkeeper in the country who could match him at the time," Preko said in the interview. There is no certainty that he would have become a Black Stars regular or enjoyed a successful professional career. However, the testimonies of those who knew him suggest that he could have pursued a future in the game. Alhassan's story resurfaced during a visit by former Ghanaian footballers to Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where they interacted with inmates and participated in activities involving the prison community. Among those present was former Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour, who shared words of encouragement with the inmates. The gathering offered Alhassan an opportunity to reconnect with a football community to which he had once hoped to belong professionally.
