Inside details of how a 30-year-old man was lured, kidnapped, tortured and held hostage
The Ghana Police Service has rescued a 30-year-old man, identified as Bismarck Amo, who was allegedly kidnapped and subjected to severe torture by a group of suspects in an intelligence-led operation. The Central North Regional Police Command said four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident and are assisting with investigations. According to a police statement issued on Monday, September 14, 2026, the operation, code-named “Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators,” was coordinated by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno. The suspects have been identified as Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School; Charles Doku, 53, a security guard; Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician; and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, alias Culture, whose age has not been confirmed. Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the incident began after Amo allegedly defrauded Mavis Badu Acheampong of an unspecified amount of money. The statement said Mavis allegedly connived with her husband, a senior military officer who is currently outside the country, to lure Amo from his residence at Assin Fosu to Kumasi. “Upon his arrival, Mavis, with the assistance of Charles Doku, Oteng Baffour, and others currently at large, forcefully kidnapped Amo,” the police said. The victim was allegedly held at Mavis’ private residence from September 6 to September 11, 2026, despite his family paying GH¢19,500 as ransom. Police further alleged that the kidnappers subjected Amo to severe torture and recorded the abuse before sending the videos to his family to demand more money. “The suspects filmed these horrific acts of abuse and sent the videos to the victim's traumatised family to demand a ransom of GH¢45,000,” the statement said. The family reported the incident to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Assin Fosu on September 8, after paying the GH¢19,500 ransom. Police said the suspects attempted to transfer Amo to another location on September 11 after realising that law enforcement was closing in on them. Tactical teams intercepted the vehicle and rescued him. Amo was rushed to a medical facility where he remains under police escort and is receiving treatment for physical trauma and psychological injuries. The four suspects are in police custody and are being processed for court, while police continue a manhunt for a senior military officer allegedly linked to the incident and other accomplices. The Police Administration has assured the public that it remains committed to dismantling organised criminal syndicates and bringing those responsible to justice.
