‘How do I run 66 offices with GH¢60k?’ – Rent Control Boss questions Ato Forson
The Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has raised concerns over what he describes as severe underfunding of the Department, warning that its operations across the country are being hampered by inadequate financial resources. According to him, the Department received only GH¢60,000 to run its 66 offices nationwide during the first quarter of 2026. Speaking on Adom FM, Mr Opoku questioned how the Department is expected to effectively discharge its mandate with such limited funding. “GH¢60,000 to run Rent Control for three months? What’s the meaning of this? The Finance Minister and all of them should listen to this and act on it,” he said. He stressed that the Rent Control Department plays a critical role in addressing housing-related concerns and protecting the interests of tenants and landlords. Opoku further disclosed that funding for the second quarter brought the total allocation to GH¢120,000 for the entire country, a situation he said was inadequate to support the Department’s operations. “For 66 offices, what do you mean? How do you expect Rent Control to function?” he added. He appealed to the Finance Minister to review the Department’s allocation and provide adequate resources to enable it to operate effectively and respond to housing and tenancy-related complaints across the country.
