Hong Kong Tiananmen activists sentenced to up to seven years in prison

A Hong Kong court has sentenced activists linked to the group that organised the city’s annual Tiananmen Square vigils to prison terms of up to seven years. The defendants, members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, were convicted under the city’s national security laws. The Alliance for decades organised the candlelight vigils marking the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, events that were banned in recent years as authorities tightened control over the city. Rights groups have criticised the sentences as part of a broader crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong.
