GTEC DIRECTS PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES TO REOPEN BY OCTOBER 16 AMID GAUA, TUSAAG STRIK
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed all public universities to reopen their campuses by Friday, October 16, 2026, and resume lectures on Monday, October 19, despite an ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG). In a directive dated Tuesday, October 13, and addressed to vice-chancellors of public universities, GTEC warned that the prolonged suspension of academic activities could disrupt students’ academic progression, university operations and international academic partnerships. While acknowledging the administrative challenges arising from the industrial action of GAUA and TUSAAG, the Commission has emphasised that the indefinite suspension of academic activities has far-reaching implications for students’ academic progression, institutional operations, national tertiary education delivery and international academic partnerships,” the directive stated. GTEC said the government, through the Ministries of Education and Finance and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), had begun engagements with GAUA leadership to resolve outstanding grievances. The Commission directed university governing councils and management to ensure that lecturers resume on the scheduled date, while urging striking GAUA members to return to their administrative duties as negotiations continue. “Members of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) are requested to resume their administrative duties within the framework of the ongoing good-faith negotiations between the Government and the Association,” the directive said. University management has also been instructed to ensure that halls of residence, academic libraries, departmental registration desks and other essential student support facilities are fully operational by Thursday, October 15, to facilitate student registration and the resumption of academic activities. The directive comes as the industrial action by university administrators continues to disrupt administrative services at public universities. GTEC’s deadline requires institutions to restore academic activities while negotiations with the striking unions proceed. Credit: citinewsroom.com
