Major roads under Big Push to be tolled when completed – Agbodza

The Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza, says major roads being constructed under the government’s Big Push initiative will be tolled once completed and opened to the public. According to him, the planned Accra-Kumasi Expressway will also attract toll charges, stressing that motorists will not be compelled to use the expressway if they do not want to pay the toll. Speaking at the 2026 Transport Sector Review in Ho, Agbodza said government has re-enacted the Road Fund to provide sustainable financing for the maintenance of road infrastructure across the country. He also called for policies to restrict some heavy-duty vehicles from using certain public roads, arguing that such measures are necessary to prevent premature deterioration of the roads. “We are taking steps to modernise revenue mobilisation through technology following Parliament’s approval of a 20-year public-private partnership concession in July 2026. “The government is introducing a multi-lane and free-flow electronic tolling system, and this system will be implemented on every public road that has been improved. “Every interchange in our country will attract the attention of road tolling, especially the Accra-Kumasi Expressway comes with its own tolling system.
