Speaking at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President John Dramani Mahama called out the historical and structural inequalities in global governance. With a population of 1.5 billion people, representing over 18% of humanity, Africa continues to be denied a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. President Mahama made it clear that Security Council reform and fair global financing are no longer favours, but urgent imperatives for global justice and credibility. "Africa does not seek charity. Africa seeks equal partnership anchored in mutual respect", President John Dramani Mahama. Mr Mahama told the world leaders that there was a need to respect all nations irrespective of race. "No race is superior. No nation is inferior," he said. He added, "No child’s life is worth less because of the language they speak, the faith they profess." Regarding the transatlantic slave trade and reparations justice, President Mahama said that some cautioned that we were reopening old wounds. "But we came not to provoke division or render empty judgment. We came to seek healing," he said. He further said that the structural legacies of those historic crimes continue to fuel systemic racism, economic marginalisation, and a global financial architecture weighted against Africa and people of African descent.
